Then 1400 armed French paratroopers were released from imprisonment by the Japanese and, looking for vengeance after Ho Chi Minh’s declaration of independence, immediately took to the streets, breaking into the homes and shops of the Vietnamese and attacking civilians. The Viet Minh responded by calling a general strike and by launching a guerrilla campaign against the French. On 24 September French general Jacques Philippe Leclerc arrived in Saigon, declaring ‘We have come to reclaim our inheritance’.
