That is, within the logics of their practices. Young people like Anthony are living out what Du Bois-Reymond (1998) calls a ‘normal biography’. Normal biographies are linear, anticipated and predictable, unreflexive transitions, often gender and class specific, rooted in well-established lifeworlds. They are often driven by an absence of decisions. Such young people talked of going to university as ‘automatic’, ‘taken for granted’, ‘always assumed’ (see also Pugsley, 1998). ‘That was the family plan, that was the expectation of everyone’, as Tom from Cosmopolitan Boys put it.

And it was just such a contrast, and I sat there and I was thinking – what are these people doing, are they trying to get us to go to this university? And they showed us the social life and we saw people drinking. I know university students do that anyway, but I just think it was a good way of, you know, of putting us off some of the things the students were doing on the video was just not very nice, and then they took us to the gyms, sport gyms and that and then sat down and we had like a 20 minute discussion on education and the type of courses they offer and how good they were and stuff like that, so very different .
