The causes were multifold: the second oil shock; stagflation (inflation without growth); the high cost of capital (about which Landau and Hatsopoulos write perceptively); the crowded markets, particu- Page 20 larly as Europeans and the Japanese caught up to and in some cases surpassed US firms in terms of technological productivity and capabilities; and the increasing costs of integrating the new technologies into existing operating procedures and processes.
But nearly all had to use Intel's chips and Microsoft's software. In addition to giving Intel (and Gates) probably the most valuable franchise in American industrial history, IBM provided it with $400 million, which tided Intel over the financial stringency resulting from the loss of the memory chip business and the cost of designing and constructing the new microprocessor plants. It did so by purchasing 20 percent of Intel's stock, which it later sold off.
