As was noted earlier, in the United States, the social assistance programme for lone mothers with children known as Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) has been replaced with the coercive Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) programme supposedly to end welfare dependency, facilitate employment and raise incomes.
