He would also refer parents of special needs children to us when they had questions about the special education process or how to get services. When the pediatrician had interns working in his office and he had an appointment with Ryan, he provided the interns with the opportunity to talk with them. We feel that it is very important that current and future medical professionals become acquainted with children like our son in order to motivate them to learn more about the disorder. Had Ryan’s first pediatrician been aware of the characteristics of Asperger Syndrome, Ryan could have had some much-needed early intervention.

During their walk, the principal expressed his concerns about having students with special needs in a general education classroom for the entire day. He thought that these students should be provided with additional assistance in the content mastery room. DeAnn acknowledged his concerns but remained firm on our decision to have Ryan placed in a general education class all day. At about this time, they came upon a couple of students who were helping to prepare classrooms for the coming school year.

We believe that the IEP committee agreed because they simply had no other placement suggestions, other than the Child Management Class. The committee accepted the doctor’s recommendations for Ritalin therapy and counseling. Although the IEP committee had agreed to Ryan receiving counseling services, it was not documented in the IEP paperwork who would pay, leaving us with the impression that we were responsible for paying for the counseling. Kindergarten – summer DeAnn talked with Ryan’s pediatrician about the psychiatrist’s recommendation to place Ryan on Ritalin.
