Before you object, think about it for a moment and I think you’ll agree with me: Remember that your minor characters don’t matter except as tools to push forward your plot, dramatize your theme, and/or characterize your protagonist’s problems through a subplot. The minor characters are fun window dressing to give a sense of reality and perhaps momentarily lighten or darken the tone. But remember that the story is about your protagonist. Don’t waste time developing the lifetime histories of your minor characters—instead, if you are intrigued, write your next story about one of them.

Adjectives and adverbs suggest passive writing in which you are describing things, not actions. When writing nouns, use specific ones that don’t need much description. When writing verbs, use interesting ones—instead of “ran” try raced, or wove, or hesitated. When you’re writing/rewriting, don’t settle for the first words or phrasing that come to mind, but play with these things. Watch out for clichés. During your edit if you find adjectives or adverbs modifying your subjects and actions, cut them.

Some examples of a wound might be growing up dirt-poor, losing a parent at ten years old, or being jilted at the altar. ______ Tip #8: Your hero often will have a “wound”—a deep emotional hurt from his or her past. A Hidden Need The hidden need is an emotional flaw that your protagonist has. If your protagonist has a wound, the hidden need grows from this. The hidden need prevents your protagonist from dealing appropriately with other people. Some examples of a hidden need might be that your protagonist values money more than doing the right thing, or is afraid to act as a leader, or needs to forgive someone.
