All the Robinson children were fine athletes. In junior high Jackie played football, baseball, and basketball and ran track, and even won a citywide tournament in Ping-Pong. Some of his white friends dreamed about playing major league baseball, but by the time he was a teenager, Jackie knew that would be impossible for him. Even though there were all-black professional baseball teams, Jackie understood that for most African American young men, there were few opportunities to play sports professionally as an adult.
Jackie was a terrific all-around athlete, and in his first year at UCLA, his junior year, he competed in track, football, basketball, and baseball. He played shortstop on the baseball team, and once he got on base, he was almost impossible to throw out. He drove the opposition crazy stealing bases. Despite his accomplishments, when Jackie looked to the future, he did not like what he saw. Despite having won a silver medal and having earned a college degree, Jackie’s brother Mack had a hard time finding work simply because of the color of his skin.
Once again Jackie had a tough time in the spring. The Dodgers asked him to play a new position, first base. Due to segregation he had to live and eat separately from his teammates. A few Dodgers told Rickey they would not play with an African American and asked to be traded. Others acted as if Jackie were invisible. It was tough for him to concentrate on baseball under such conditions. But as the regular season approached, he played better and better, and earned a place in the starting lineup as the Dodger first baseman.
