Only when some of these things have clearly failed should you yield to the temptation to open a book, and even then it should be a general book in which you search for just that information you need to get your thinking to bite. Thinking is, as we saw earlier in this chapter, a difficult thing to do, particularly if you find formal reasoning in something of a vacuum not your natural style. It can, however, be practised. Bear it in mind that your essay will be your ‘best’ answer, not an answer to be found pat in some book.
