Written in 1878, around the same time as the wildly successful Slavonic Rhapsodies and Dances, the sextet, too, draws on traditional Czech forms and styles.

Mozart: String Quartet in B-flat Major, K. 458 A prolific opera composer, Mozart was an expert dramatist, and his knack for keeping an audience’s attention and tugging at their emotions extended to his works for the concert hall. The early fortepianos produced a more "orchestral" sound that blended easily into the orchestral background, so that discreet continuo playing could have the effect of strengthening the sonic output of the orchestra without (in effect) destroying the ritornellic structure that is the basis for the Mozart piano concerto.

This model, despite not being a binary form, observes the sonata principle. His Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K 550, for example, has the form: Classical symphonies are anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes in length. These all had an observable influence on his own writing. Though it is a work for six instruments, Chausson’s odd title is far more fitting a name than “sextet”. The first movement of Mozart’s Sonata in F Major, K. 332, exemplifies his style at the beginning of his Vienna period. Unlike all of Dussek’s subsequent efforts in the genre, this concerto is cast in only two movements (without a middle slow movement): an opening Allegro, capped by a fast rondo.
