In an ambitious, forward-looking study jointly sponsored by California's five largest electric utilities, E3 evaluated the operational challenges, potential solutions, and cost consequences of a higher Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) in California by 2030. Additional technology adoption research under the project has conducted comparative breakeven analysis of perennial wheat, finding a need for increases of over 100% in both price and yield before perennial wheat could compete with annual wheat as an alternative (Weir 2012).

Research on economic valuation of ecosystem services from agriculture in collaboration with the Long-term Ecological Research (LTER) project at Kellogg Biological Station led to symposia at the American Academy for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Agricultural Economics Association (AAEA) annual meetings. These are difficult problems, and we seldom find that difficult problems have easy solutions. Given the important amount of transfers done by the central government to the local governments (5.6 billion USD or 3.6% of the 2010 Peruvian GDP at current prices), this money should have been invested and had some effect on local populations.
